September – week 3

Derwent Water —

smooth and clear

as polished marble

~

this still lake

and these mountains painted

in antiquity…

rain on her sleeve, the sky

upsets a tin of tacks

~

Lakeland…

golden trees bend to see

their reflections

~

autumn leaves

where we walked beneath

a honey moon

the folds and unfolds of dreams,

the yellowed tape of Lakeland

~

September morning…

distant trees washed

with silver fog

~

moss-covered roots…

one breath of what this oak

knows of time

~

September – week 2

autumn moon

stained with the colours

of creativity

~

the bitter truth

this one acorn on the path…

Still Green Moon

~

with each swing

of the seat

a spider’s web

expands

and retracts

~

ellipsis

you’re gone     you’re gone

and yet…

catching this gossamer

what’s left of the light

~

relentless rain…

then the winding road

to a sun-filled valley

~

untimely cool

she is dead — yet still, the scent

of honeysuckle

~

September – week 1

howling wind —

led by hunger

this tiny goldfinch

ignored

the weather warnings

~

chill winds…

how the goldfinch clings to

the sunflower’s heart

~

one man’s rubbish

is another’s

gold

gulls wheel

over the tip

~

until…

she curls around a memory

of herself

this golden timepiece

summer’s fading pulse

~

August – week 4

summer into autumn —

a swift’s last dive

for an insect

~

drifting dunes

close enough to silence

the wingbeats

of sandmartins

summer’s fading pulse

~

half asleep…

through the blinds

three stars shine

~

moon song…

Sirius howling

the length of night

~

wind in our faces —

no dippers today

on the swollen river

~

mind-deep

in the last swell of summer

each breath

one breath, one breath closer

to the flax of wind-spun foam

~

August – week 3

just to remind us

he’s not gone yet

a chiffchaff

picks insects

from the washing line

~

wickerwork

light through the pines

the chiffchaff’s song

~

August rain —

one last duckling

left on the lake

~

dawn rain…

between two worlds

I listen

for words

that fell in the night

~

unpredictable nature —

looking for dippers

seeing a heron

~

at the hearth

of this ancient sky

with ash

on her fingers…

the heron’s flight

~

August – week 2

they carry on talking

but I see a flash

of a sparrowhawk’s hunt

~

a feather

from a tawny owl’s wing

the brush

of moonlight and a poem

dreamed

~

three redheads

chat in the park…

goosanders

~

parting kiss…

summer gives her heart

to sunflowers

laughter drifting

on the breeze

~

August – week 1

noisy gulls —

a cormorant tucks its bill

into its breast

~

twilight blues…

lowering the mainsail

the cries of gulls

~

glittering water…

on The Volunteer boat

a lone gull

~

lobster pots

stacked at the quayside

nothing to catch

but a young girl’s dreams

and the whispers of the tide

~

August morning…

a whisper of winter

on the robin’s breast

~

thoughts turn to you

when flame becomes song…

first robin

(For Svetlana)
